Is it possible to have too many spices in your cabinet? That’s like asking a woman if she can have too many pairs of shoes.
At first, most women will more than likely say NO! But, after her closet looks like an episode of the hoarding shows, she will begrudgingly admit that too much of anything isn’t always best.
This is how I feel about my spice cabinet. A couple of years ago, I had waaaay too many jars of, well…EVERYTHING. I even had double of certain herbs because I had more jars than I could keep up with. When auditing my pantry, I took notice of the spices I use the most and got rid of the bottles I didn’t use at all (which were expired anyway).
As a Health Coach and foodie, I always try to get the best quality spices possible. But, as a cheapskate on the not-so-low, I don’t like spending a ton of money on them because I’m working on a budget.
Thankfully, there are quite a few places where I find great spices on the cheap.
1. Whole Foods
Yeah, if you know me, you knew I was going to mention this store. I’m only in my local Whole Foods at least twice a week.

I love Whole Foods. And yes, they do have a bad but true reputation for eating up your whole paycheck, there’s a ton of ways to save money there with a little discipline and a couple tips.
One of the most affordable luxuries there are their spices. They offer a huge variety of choices at different prices starting from $2. YEP, $2!!
The smallest packages look like the one above and are more than enough to cook several dishes. They also offer a line of spices from the lower priced store brand, 365 along with higher priced items in their premium line.

2. Trader Joes
This is another favorite of mine. I can get lost for at least an hour just walking the aisles. Trader Joes is well known for their affordable offerings. They have a bit of everything for everybody, and the spice department is no different.
Trader Joes has a great selection of both everyday and semi-exotic spices available at affordable prices. They even have seasonal blends only available for limited times in the year. I often purchase those in bulk and save them for special dishes I hope to make later on. All of the spices are generally less than $10 each and are carried at most stores.
3. Thrive Market
Another great store for affordable spices is the online retailer, Thrive Market. Thrive Market is a members only website that sells affordable natural and organic, health, and wellness products at a discount. Think BJs or Costco but online and stocked only with natural and organic foods.
Thrive Market offers a 30 day trial period when you sign up to allow you to try out the service before committing to the service and having to pay the $59.95 annual fee. I know it may sound like a lot, but if you are a frequent patron of natural foods that are packaged and/or an adventurous foodie who loves trying out new foods on the market, you will quickly be able to make your money back in savings. Some of the spices offered on the sites include a variety of cinnamons, seasonal and cuisine specific blends, herbs, whole seeds, and so much more. Most of the spices come in small packages and start from $2.99.

4. Walmart
Yup, good old Walmart. I’ve recently come across their vast organic line of spices at incredible prices. In store, theres usually a fair amount of organic items available, BUT, online there are waaaay more. I literally had to stop myself from spending over $50 in random spices just the other day. Most start around $3 and can be shipped directly to you. Check out some of their choices here.
Eating healthier can definitely get boring without the right spices. Hopefully these suggestions will help make exploring the glorious spice world possible without going broke.
