Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that more plant based options are popping up everywhere. As they say, ask and you shall receive. The more plant eating folks speak up and ask for a bigger variety of options at their favorite restaurants, the more options will start popping up.
While standing on line at my local Starbucks, I came across a new salad which was completely vegan and jam packed with protein.
But, wait a minute? Aren’t salads always vegan…they are basically bowls of vegetables right? NOPE!!
Surprisingly, a lot of prepackaged salads have a lot of non-vegetable additions. Bits of bacon, grilled chicken, cheese, an d more are often sprinkled into these meals. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing them because I understand a lot of people aren’t thrilled by the thought of a boring bowl of leaves…I get it because that’s boring to me too.
However, those are not the ONLY options available for a kick ass salad. PLUS, adding too many non-veggie additions actually secretly spikes the calorie content of the salad (and forget about the sodium content…omg). For example, some of the Wendy’s salads are actually higher in calories than the burgers. Don’t believe me check out their nutritional information HERE. Yes, there are some pretty good options AND it is a great starting place for people that are trying to get their palette used to more fresh vegetables, but it may take a little research to figure out which specific salad is best.
This is why I was happy to see the new Lentils & Vegetable Protein Bowl with Brown Rice . It has an impressive 23 grams of protein from whole food plant based sources. It has 21 grams of fiber and is only 650 calories. Plus, it costs about $8.
I spoke about it and showed the actual salad briefly in my Instagram story a couple of weeks back which you can check out below. And don’t forget to check out the #lifehack I share to get certain drinks such as the refreshers for cheaper.
Looking for a quick and super affordable plant based breakfast option at Starbucks? A lot of their bagels are actually vegan and state it on the little card with the nutritional information in store. In addition, the avocado spread is vegan as well according to the ingredients on the package.
Add a short (yes, I said a SHORT) cup of pike roast coffee to the combo and you have a meal for less than $5. Short cups are smaller than the tall and cost around $2.01 including tax but aren’t always displayed in store (though they almost always have them behind the counter).
So to review, here are two affordable plant based options currently available at Starbucks:
- Vegan bagel (toasted or not) with avocado spread for DIY Avocado Toast (Ask the barista which of the bagels are vegan. There are at least 2-3.) Cost: Around $3
- Lentils & Vegetable Protein Bowl with Brown Rice (Ask the Barista if you don’t see it) Cost: Around $8
