Inflammation. It’s THE buzz word of buzz words right now.
Let’s take a minute to get this whole inflammation thing straight.
According to WebMd.com, Inflammation is a process by which the body’s white blood cells and substances they produce protect us from infection with foreign organisms, such as bacteria and viruses.
When inflammation occurs, chemicals from the body’s white blood cellsare released into the blood or affected tissues to protect your body from foreign substances. This release of chemicals increases the blood flow to the area of injury or infection, and may result in redness and warmth. Some of the chemicals cause a leak of fluid into the tissues, resulting in swelling. This protective process may stimulate nerves and cause pain.
Often times, inflammation shows up in and on the body in the form of arthritis, skin issues, cardiovascular issues, overall discomfort, and more.
HOWEVER, one common spice has been clinically proven to fight a plethora of inflammation related problems. The vibrantly colored Turmeric may just be the cure all for many seeking natural relief. More specifically, it is the compound Curcumin in the Turmeric plant that provide the punch.
According to the beginning of this PubMed study, some promising effects have been observed in patients with various pro-inflammatory diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, uveitis, ulcerative proctitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel disease, tropical pancreatitis, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer, idiopathic orbital inflammatory pseudotumor, oral lichen planus, gastric inflammation, vitiligo, psoriasis, acute coronary syndrome, atherosclerosis, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic microangiopathy, lupus nephritis, renal conditions, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, β-thalassemia, biliary dyskinesia, Dejerine-Sottas disease, cholecystitis, and chronic bacterial prostatitis.
By the end of this same study, curcumin has shown therapeutic potential against a number of human diseases. Common to all of these studies have been the safety, tolerability, and non-toxicity of this polyphenol, even at doses up to 8 g per day.
As mentioned in the video titled Turmeric Curcumin Reprogramming Cancer Cell Death seen below by (my favorite doctor of all time) Dr. Michael Greger, curcumin helps to cancer cells activates their death receptors which is exactly what a person needs to help fight and prevent any potentially damaging cell activity. Check it out below.
So, it’s pretty easy to see that Turmeric is something may be beneficial to incorporate into one’s diet on a regular basis.
Just as an aside, research has shown that while Turmeric can be useful, it is not very bioavailable to the body when consumed on it’s own. However a bit of black pepper can drastically boost it’s absorption and effectivity. Check out the video below to find out more information on this.

Golden Milk
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to add it into the diet is by drinking it on a daily basis through a beverage called Golden Milk.
Golden Milk is a tea of sorts made with a milk (preferably a nut milk), coconut oil, and black pepper. Why coconut oil? Well, turmeric’s absorption is said to be boosted even further when consumed with fat…a healthy fat that is.
However, I try to avoid having to make a fresh batch of golden milk each day, I make the process shorter by making a Turmeric Paste once a week and just add the paste to milk or coconut water on the fly.
Turmeric Paste can be made with water, turmeric, and coconut oil. Here is the breakdown:
1 1/2 Cups Water
1/2 Cup Ground Turmeric (this is the one I use)
2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
3 Teaspoons Coconut Oil (this is the one I use)
1. Add the water to a saucepan and bring to a boil.
2. Add the turmeric, oil, and pepper to the water stirring for 3-4 minutes.
3. Put the paste into a clean jar. (I use mason jars like these)
4. Let cool and store in fridge.
I add other spices like cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla extract once I make each portion of golden milk I make. I put this paste in a jar and store it in the fridge for a week or two.
To make Golden Milk from the paste:
1. Pour one cup of milk (or nut milk) into a saucepan.
2. Add One teaspoon of Turmeric Paste to mix and stir in until the paste is distributed evenly.
3. Bring to a boil and enjoy.
Being that this drink is not sweet, I usually add a teaspoon of organic cane sugar or a couple of drops of organic stevia to sweeten it up.
If you want to just make golden milk, check out this recipe.
Let me know if you try it by leaving a comment below!! Remember to add the black pepper!!
