Switching to natural and less toxic products is (thankfully) a trend that’s not going anywhere.
At first, it took a while for people to get used to seeing these additional options in mainstream stores. However, the amount of products to choose from on the shelves is slowly growing.
This is most apparent when big box stores such as Walmart start incorporating these products into their store brand line, as they recently have with the Equate Beauty Aluminum Free Deodorant.
It comes in a couple of scents, but my go to regardless of brand or price point is Lavender. So, that is what I went with.
On the label, it says it’s meant to compare to Tom’s of Maine Aluminum Free Deodorant.
Admittedly, I never really had a great experience with that brand or product as I explained in this blog post.
But, I have been on the look out to find great natural products at all price points, so I took the leap and bought it.
Price
This deodorant is amazingly priced at less than $4 per stick. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a natural deodorant so cheap. This is great because it makes the barrier of entry super low for someone tip toeing into the natural world. If it works out for them, they have this great option at an affordable price.
On the flip side, if it doesn’t work out, they can get mad and throw it in the trash (probably swearing off natural deodorants for the foreseeable future), without being out too much money.
Effectiveness
So, this is something I truly feel is incredibly subjective. Let me explain why.
When I first tried to switch to natural deodorant’s after using conventional ones for my entire pubescent and adult life, I swore they didn’t work. I ended up smelling more than before and was more sweaty as well. That’s when I did as I mentioned someone would do earlier and swore off of them for the foreseeable future.
Fast forward another couple of years, I became educated on why making the switch was so important to my health. So, I made the commitment to see the transition to natural deodorants through to the end, no matter what. And no, it was not pretty. I explained it in more detail in this YouTube video.
After months of a less than great smelling transition, my body was finally used to more natural products in my armpits and was free from the chemicals that was previously clogging them up. Be sure to check out the video to get more on the backstory.
I say this to shed light on the fact that each person and their body’s reaction to less chemicals after who knows how long of using them, is different. For some they get stinkier before they smell less, and for others there’s no change. So, to take a person’s experience with such a personal product as final grounds on how effective a particular deodorant is, isn’t exactly fair to the product.
When I used it now, (after me having used natural deodorants for years), I noticed it was moderately effective at keeping odor and sweat at bay. Granted, we are in the winter and I’m not doing a ton of working out other than running after my kids, (which is a notable workout if I say so myself), so my experience might be skewed.
It did great for the majority of the day and then became less effective by the end of the night, which is when I take my shower anyway. This is definitely not a 48 hour odor blocker of a formulation, but no natural deodorant is nor meant to be. But, it was pretty effective overall.
If someone was just blindly switching over to natural products without the knowledge of how their body might react, this might lead them to think all natural products are a bit of a joke though. It’s pretty mild in comparison and may leave them disappointed.
This would be a great option for kids who are just starting to use deodorant and don’t need to be exposed to all those chemicals in other deodorants.
How “Clean” Are The Ingredients
It can be super confusing to know what are the best and least toxic of the natural products because the claims are all over the place.
However, there are a couple of great resources to guide you through it. One of my most recent finds and faves is the Think Dirty app. It’s a convenient database of natural products and their toxicity levels in one simple, free app.
According to this app, this deodorant scored a 3. A range of 0-3 is the lowest and least potentially toxic on the market according to the tests and research their team has conducted. So, it’s actually pretty good for a big box store brand that’s not really known for pumping out super clean and natural products.
Overall, I was impressed with this deodorant’s effectiveness and quality for the price. I would definitely recommend it for someone that is used to using natural deodorants and is looking for a cheap alternative to keep as a back up, weekend bag, or at work.
I would certainly invite someone new to the natural deodorant world to try it, but warn them of the potential side effects that I have experienced in the past. Who knows, it might’ve only been me.
Let me know below if you’ve tried this brand before or if you’ve seen it in the stores.
