A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to have an intimate conversation with a small group of women and Rebecca Minkoff led by Latham Thomas of MamaGlow.com at the Rebecca Minkoff store in Soho.
Rebecca Minkoff is a powerhouse in the fashion industry, known for her iconic bags and street chic style. Her famous Morning After Bag is a thing of beauty, gracing the arms of stylish women everywhere. I admit that I have owned at least one (or two or three), along with some of her similarly famous bags like the Morning After Clutch.
In this talk, we learned about Rebecca’s delivery experiences, how her family deals with childcare and crazy schedules. She also spoke about business and many of the misconceptions people have about making it big overnight. Rebecca also talked at great length on her commitment to providing the women and mothers of her company with a workspace and experience that is positive and conducive to making choices that are best for them.
The 2 Biggest Lessons I Learned That Day Which Will Stay With Me Include:
1. Success Takes Time
During the talk, Rebecca explained how success is NOT an overnight occurrence. She explained how she started from “the bottom” (cue Drake) as an intern and hustled to eventually lucked out my getting the right tee shirt on the right person at the right time. That got her name out a bit, but she was also working side jobs to make ends meet. She finally launched her bag line with a single model and the rest is history.
However, people thought that she was an overnight success once her name was being associated with the term “It Bag”. It was both refreshing & relieving hearing this straight from her.

2. Figure Out How You Want Your Experience As A Mother To Be BEFORE The Baby Gets Here
This is something I can truly attest to. When I walked into the hospital to give birth to my son, I knew that I wanted to do WHATEVER it took to NOT have a C-Section. I knew the risk that was involved and I wanted to avoid it if I could. In the end, I succeeded in having a natural childbirth despite having been given Pitocin and an epidural (I just avoided upping the dosage on the pain meds to maintain feeling in my lower half. Many women I know went into the birth room running from the pain asking for additional pain meds and ended up have to get cut).
I truly believe that my success was based on my mental state and dedication to a goal.
Rebecca spoke on her similar commitment to breastfeeding because it was what’s best for her children. This led her to holding business meetings while pumping, clearing rooms filled with men (mostly because they were more embarrassed than she was) to stick to her schedule, and more.
She also tries to foster an environment welcoming of motherhood and all it’s intricacies within her workplace. She provides lactation rooms for her employees, and ensures moms can detach from the job as much as possible when on maternity leave as possible to name a few.
This is amazing! I commend her for creating safe work spaces for women.
These were just a few of the gems she shared that evening. I’m so happy to have met her and will surely implement some of her strategies and knowledge.
