The 3 Natural Supplements I Take To Prevent A Cold Before It’s Too Late

It’s that time of the year when we keep an eye on our health to avoid being left miserable with a cold or (even worse), the flu. As soon as I feel a little itch in my throat accompanied with a bit of pain my ear, I know I need to ramp things up a bit when it comes to immune support.

In addition to slowing down and resting a bit more, I’ve started reaching for 3 specific supplements over the last year or so, (even through pregnancy), and it has proved pretty successful.

Here’s a quick breakdown of my three cold preventing go-to’s:

1. Fire Cider

Fire Cider is an old school tonic type recipe that’s made with garlic, horseradish, and apple cider vinegar, amongst other veggies. It’s said to help boost immunity and detoxing.

I came across it the first time a couple of years ago at my old food co-op. It was being sampled and I was skeptical on it’s claims. However, I gave it a whirl within the next couple of weeks and was truly impressed with it’s effectiveness.

Believe me, it’s NOT the most pleasant tasting mix out there…far from it. But, this brand has been my go to for almost 2 years. If I take it when I first feel a cold coming on and pair it with rest, I know I have a fighting chance at avoiding a full on cold. My son absolutely won’t take it because it smells terrible. But it works wonders for me.

For the record, there are plenty of DIY Fire Cider Recipes online. If you are up to it, you can definitely make it yourself at home.

2. Vitamin C Spray

While there is a lot of debate to whether vitamin c is actually the cold “cure all” people think it is, I have always benefited from increasing consumption of it when I’m feeling a bit under the weather.

I have previously shared my favorite whole food based vitamin C spray in this review video. This Garden of Life spray is a must have in my house and is taken by everyone. It’s affordable and lasts about a month with 3 people using it, which is a pretty good investment if you ask me.

3. Elderberry Syrup

If I had to pick one out of the 3 things listed in this post that I would recommend, it would HAVE to be Elderberry. Elderberry syrup is made from actual elderberries and can also be made at home with a little time and effort.

Elderberry is known for it’s ability to support the immune system to help fight the common cold and possibly even the flu. According to this study, it was found to help travelers in intercontinental travel who were exposed to the common cold. And this is just one study.

We take a little bit of elderberry almost everyday in my house. I have definitely seen a decrease in frequency of colds by all of my family members since we have started incorporating it into our daily routine. Even when my son found out the flu was bouncing around in his school, this ,(along with avid hand washing), helped keep it from making it’s way into the house.

This is the elderberry syrup I’ve been purchasing lately because it is the most cost efficient for our budget and members in the family. It can be purchased here on Amazon and sent straight to your house.

If I were to purchase any other brand in store, I would just look for one that is free of added sugars and unnecessary ingredients.

I hope this short but sweet line up helps protect you and/or your family during this winter season. Let me know below if there are ay mother measures you take to keep the common cold at bay.
